ILMINSTER: Olympic torch coming to Ilminster

Celebration plans are being drawn up after it was announced that the Olympic 2012 Torch Relay would pass through Ilminster.

Councillors are hoping residents will line the streets to wave on the torchbearer during the town’s leg of the 70-day relay on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012.

Ilminster’s lucky torchbearer will be announced next month.

The 8,000 torchbearers have been chosen for their strong links to the area they are running in. 

The Mayor of Ilminster, Councillor Carol Goodall, said: “It is an unexpected honour to discover that the Olympic torch will be coming through our town.  

“I’m sure that the residents of Ilminster will turn out to show their support to this event and join in this celebration and we look forward to working with the organising committees to ensure a successful day.”

The torch is also set to go through Yeovil, Ilchester and Somerton during the south Somerset section of the route.

The towns are just four of more than 1,000 villages, towns and cities to host the torch. The relay is due to begin on May19th in Cornwall and end at the Olympic Stadium on July 27th.

The street by street detail of 8,000 mile the route will be confirmed next year. 

Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council, said: “This is wonderful news for South Somerset. We are proud that the Olympic Torch Relay will be visiting our district. 

“An event like this will shine a light on our district and I am positive that local residents will turn out in large numbers to welcome the flame and support members of the community who have been chosen to run the with Olympic Flame

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay in our own ‘back yard.’

Sebastian Coe, Chair of London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games LOCOG said they were thrilled to confirm that Ilminster would act as host location for the Olympic Flame.
