28th October 2011DEVON FOOTBALL: Nine-man Axminster Town fall under Budleigh spotlight
AXMINSTER Town had a night to forget under the floodlight’s at Budleigh Salterton on Wednesday.
Two Jamie Chamberlain goals saw the Tigers twice fight back to level at 2-2 with just 20 minutes played. But straight red cards for both Joel Seward (last man foul) and Sam Heath (elbow) left Ray Self’s side with just nine men and 55 minutes still to play.
Predictably the hosts struck three times after the hour mark to leave Ax emptihanded.
Afterwards Self was very disappointed with the performance of the referee, he said: “Joel’s red card was a terrible decision. There were at least three of our players back covering - I think the referee overreacted after a previous massed melee.
Sam’s looked much more debateable, I thought he led with his elbow but our supporters on that side of the ground were incensed by the decision.
“We showed tremendous spirit to hold them for 20 minutes but once they went ahead again that was it.
“This was I felt an opportunity missed - we need to improve our discipline and cut out the defensive errors - and a change in luck would be nice too.”
Self has named a more or less identical squad for tomorrow’s trip to Totnes & Dartington.
