21st October 2011WEYMOUTH: Bikes take over the beach
By Harry Walton
ENGINES roared when more than 300 motorcyclists took part in the annual Lions beach motocross in Weymouth.
A straight run along the water’s edge saw riders reach speeds of more than 80mph before they had to negotiate a twisting series of corners broken by challenging jumps.
The event, which raised thousands of pounds for Lions local good causes, has been held for more than 20 years.
Races were split into junior, senior and expert with fans of Superbikes able to watch star Martin Jessop take part.
The first race was started by Weymouth and Portland Mayor Councillor Graham Winter who said: “The event was a triumph for Weymouth Lions whose president Trevor Stratton said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day with record crowds to enjoy the racing.
“We heard there was a tail-back for the park and ride site stretching back nearly two miles.
“We would particularly like to thank Purbeck Motocross Club for organising the racing and everyone who came along to support our biggest day of the year.”
Weymouth and Portland leisure spokesman Councillor Andy Blackwood said: “This was a fantastic spectacle which not only entertained thousands of people but which raised thousands of pounds for good causes supported by the Lions.
“It was also a useful boost for the local economy since many businesses stayed open for the whole weekend because of the crowds whereas a good few would normally close on a Sunday.”
