PERRY STREET LEAGUE: Big win for Pethy in Somerset Junior Cup

SOMERSET JUNIOR CUP

SOUTH Petherton continued their progress in the Somerset Junior Cup with a convincing 5-1 victory at home ton Baltonsborough.

By their standards, Petherton have made a poor start to the Perry Street Premier campaign, picking up just one point from their first three games.

But this cup victory should put them in a positive mood for their important league game tomorrow (Saturday), away to local rivals Merriott Rovers.

On target for Pethy against Baltonsborough were Jody Bovey (2), Adam Bourne, Lee Richards, and Rich Hebditch.

COMBE St Nicholas also booked their place in the next round with a late winner from Josh Chadwick in their 2-1 win over Dowlish and Donyatt.

Combe took the lead in the 15th minute through Matthew Miller but Donyatt got back on terms with an equaliser from Chris Butler before half-time.

Dowlish keeper Jamie Lee saved a penalty from Simon Vincent.

Crewkerne  Town also booked their place in the next round with a comprehensive win away to Weston St Johns, their goals coming from Ed Butcher (2), Barry Hayne and Jamie Spurdle.

Merriott Rovers featured in a real ding-dong battle at home to Bath Spa, finally going out 6-4, and there was no joy for Winsham United, West and Middle Chinnock, Ilminster Town Reserves and Perry Street, who were all knocked out.

PERRY STREET LEAGUE

PREMIER

Because of the county cup competitions in Somerset, Devon and Dorset, there were no Perry Street Premier fixtures but there’s a full league programme tomorrow (Saturday).

DIVISION ONE

SHEPTON Beauchamp maintained their pressure at the top of Division One in a closely fought contest at home to Forton Rangers, winning by the odd goal in five after trailing twice.

Carl Grinter put Forton in front but man-of-the-match Dan Smith got the home side back on equal terms.

Before the break Forton had regained the lead through Dave Hurley and it took two second half strikes from Sam Murley and a 25-yard free-kick from Kris Hastings for Shepton to claim the points.

Barrington’s poor form continued with a 5-0 thrashing at home by leaders Netherbury and Perry Street Reserves picked up three points in a 4-1 win at Norton Athletic.

John Newbury (2), Joe Carbin and Kev Rowson were on target for Street with Sam Hall getting Norton’s consolation goal.

DIVISION TWO

CREWKERNE Reserves maintained their domination at the top of Division Two with a 5-0 drubbing of Chard Rangers.

A hat-trick from Paul Gold (including a penalty) and strikes by George Miles and Mike Traynor gave the Tigers’ second string their third league victory of the season.

Bottom side Hinton St George travelled across the Dorset border to lose 4-0 to Charmouth whilst Misterton Reserves featured in a 3-3 draw at home to Uplyme. Kenny Forbes (2) and Connor Fletcher were on target for Misterton.

DIVISION THREE

The West and Middle Chinnock Reserves’ v Luso Chard fixture was abandoned in the 86th minute when the players walked off the pitch after the referee allowed a contentious goal from Chinnock’s Danny Rudge.

Rudge also scored the opener with Luso’s Igor Cost equalising but the late winner so aggrieved the visitors that a number of players walked off the pitch.

CHARD United maintained their 100 per cent record with a 3-2 win at home to Millwey Rise Reserves and look to be running away with the Division Three title.

Goals from Rob Milsom. Ricky Anderson and Marco Quedos opened up a seven-point lead for United at the top of the table.

DIVISION FOUR

CHARD United Reserves are going great guns in Division Four and established  a four-point lead at the top of the table with a 6-2 win at Hawkchurch Reserves.

The three points were delivered by goals from Ian Banfield (3), Lee Spurdle, Darren Ayres and Steve Barnes.

BARRINGTON Reserves are also going well and moved into second place with a 4-1 win at Chard Rangers Reserves.

Jamie Park, Phil Bennett, Paul Thresher and Dave Lock were on target for Barrington with Mike Druce netting a penalty for Rangers.

THERE was little between Ilminster Town A and Combe B with Ilminster coming out on top in a five-goal encounter.

A Scott Davis penalty for Combe separated the sides in the first half and then Max Westlake put Combe into a 2-0 lead.

But Ilminster staged a brilliant come-back to snatch the points with goals from Luke Woodward (2) and Taylor Jefferson.

PERRY STREET PREVIEW

All eyes will be on Perry Street League Premier Division champions South petherton tomorrow (Saturday) as they bid to kick-start their season with an away tie against old rivals Merriott Rovers.

Petherton have made an uncustomary poor start to the current campaign, lying third from bottom with only one point from three games.

But after last Saturday’s Somerset Junior Cup victory manager Gordon Childs will be looking for three points at Merriott.

The other big tie in the Premier division will be the Crewkerne Town v Combe St Nicholas clash with both sides in mid-table position.

Perry Street have a tough encounter with an outing at second placed Beaminster but Ilminster Town Reserves should have few problems at Farway.

In Division One, Perry Street Reserves, with four points from their opening four games, will not be relishing their trip to table toppers Netherbury.

Division Two leaders Crewkerne Town get a break from league football with an away tie at local rivals Crewkerne Rangers in the Somerset Intermediate Cup.

Combe A, Barrington, Ilminster Town Colts, Misterton, Shepton Beauchamp and South Petherton Reserves will also be on cup duty.

In Division Three leaders Chard United are at lowly Drimpton whilst Division Four table-toppers Chard United Reserves are away to Thorncombe Reserves.
