30th September 2011DEVON FOOTBALL: Momentous occasion for proud Millwey Rise FC
TOMORROW (Saturday 1st October) brings a day that will forever go down in the history of Millwey Rise football club as they trot out on the pitch at their new home at Cloakham Lawns.
Rise, who bade an emotional farewell to The First Avenue sloping pitch which had been their home for 53-years last season, entertain Perry Street Reserves in a Perry Street League Division One Clash tomorrow.
Millwey player-manager Shane Featherstone and his squad have been in superb form this season having already pouched the Chard Hospital Cup for the first time in their history when they beat Premier Division title-favourites South Petherton 1-0 at Combe at the end of August.
Tomorrow’s game sees Rise still unbeaten this season - an achievement which will be recognised when they become the very first recipients of The Weekender Sport Perry Street League team of the Month Award.
Not to be outdone, Milwey Reserves entertain Shepton Beauchamp Reserves in the second of a double header.
Simon Flint’s side booked a place in the quarter-finals of the John Fowler cup last weekend when Danny Larcombe notched a fine hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Forton Rangers Reserves.
Keith Forsey and Mark Pike also netted for the Millwey second-string who visit to West & Middle Chinnock Reserves on October 22nd with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
AXMINSTER TOWN
THE Tigers first team had no scheduled fixture last Saturday. Tomorrow Ray Self takes his side off to take on the Exeter University students.
Self is able to name more or less the same squad which earned a fine point down at Newton Abbott Spurs 10 days ago.
“I’m hoping to bring in another striker before Saturday, but nothing is confirmed as yet” said Self who added that despite the tough start to the season spirits throughout the club as a whole were high.
Squad: Chris Higgs, Danny Galloway, Leo Maguire, Paul O’Shaunessy, Micky Walsh, Paul Dudley, Nathan Warren, Ian Mitchell, Danny Beer, Neil Pidgeon, Joel Seward.
SEATON TOWN
A 4-0 VICTORY at Thorverton has seen Seaton Town maintain their position at the top of the Fresha Devon & Exeter Premier Division.
A Ben Ede long-range scorcher put the Greens on their way at Raddon Road before further strikes from Dan Norman, Jacob Hayes and Ede again confirmed the win.
Manager Josh Stunell and his troops face a tough encounter tomorrow when they entertain a St Martins side sure to be amongst the league’s front-runners come next May.
Stunell confirmed that his line-up will be close to full strength, he said: “The only doubts at this stage (Wednesday) are concerning Ollie Highet and Jonny Wilkinson although the latter is expected to be fit for the game. Highet is doubtful due to a back injury.
“Sixteen-year-old Kieran Love keeps his place in the squad and, with the reserves without a game, Matt Hancock and ‘keeper Dave Perham have been drafted in.”
Squad: Dan Stapleton, Alex Wheatley, Josh French, Dan Norman, Cameron Vere, Charlie Cross, Matt Hancock, Tom Vincent, Kieran Love, Jacob Hayes, Mark Perham, Mark Hancock, Ritchie Durrant, Dave Perham, Ben Ede, Jonny Wilkinson.
FARWAY UNITED
A STEVE Craft penalty keeps Farway United Reserves amongst the early pace-setters in the Perry Street League Division Four.
Greg McCollum’s side may well need their shooting boots - they welcome an Uplyme Reserves side who have shipped 23 goals in their last two outings and are clearly struggling on their return to the League.
After a weekend spent clicking their heels, Farway United first team head off to West & Middle Chinnock for what could prove later to be a relegation six-pointer - even at this early stage of the season.
HONITON TOWN
HONITON had just a solitary Dan Broom goal to show from last weekend’s trip to unbeaten Westexe Rovers where they went down 4-1.
New manager Gary Osbourne and his side continue their search for a first point of the campaign when they entertain Sidmouth Town Reserves at Mountbatten Park tomorrow.
FENITON
Feniton travel to Sidbury tomorrow looking to bounce back from the disappointment of a 1-0 loss to Bow AAC last week.
A bemused Fenny boss Mark Kingdon told explained: “We played some excellent football in that game and should have had it sewn up by half-time only to see them (Bow) score with probably only their third real effort on goal in the whole game - there’s certainly a lesson to be learnt from that for my young team.
Kingdon has top scorer Paul Dowling and Matt Kingdon back this weekend but Martin Swannell is unavailable.
COLYTON
A SIMON McClelland goal saw Colyton extend their unbeaten run this season to five games after a 1-1 draw at Clyst Valley.
The Tanners, currently fifth in Division Two, entertain lowly Uplowman Athletic tomorrow.
BEER ALBION
THE Fishermen’s manager Phil Crabb is strill struggling to come to terms with how his side managed to lose at East Budleigh last weekend.
“We conceded early on and then battered them for the rest of the game but just couldn’t put the ball in the net” said Crabb who injury doubts over Martin Adkin (groin) and Mike Wheeler (ankle) ahead of tomorrow’s visit by Heavitree Social.
“Although they (Heavitree) are clearly struggling there are no easy games in this division - we will not be taking them lightly.”
AXMOUTH UNITED
FIVE competitive games, five wins - life is pretty good for Axmouth United at the moment!
The Hammers understandably travel to Woodbury tomorrow in good spirits.
Manager Laurie Forino does however have some selection concerns, he said: “Reece Hales remains a doubt but Scott Dyer has recovered, however Shaun Gould, juan Martin, Andrew Smart are all unavailable.
Squad: Goodhew, burridge, Aykroyd, Dack, Clarke, Challis, Bowles, Sandman, Berry, Sweeney, Hughes, Dyer, Ellis, Jeeves , Taylor Sweetland.
Axmouth have been handed a home draw against neighbours Beer Albion Reserves on October 8th in round two (East) of the Devon Intermediate Cup.
HAWKCHURCH UNITED
Hawkchurch extended their unbeaten run to three games with a win over Drimpton in the John Fowler Cup on Saturday.
Visitors Drimpton took the lead following a long throw which was headed in powerfully at the near post by Dan Legg.
Hawkchurch were soon level as Dan Turner notched his first of the season following a goalmouth scramble.
A lovely sweeping move allowed Stewart Weir to head Hawkchurch into the lead and Jon Legg calmly finished Gavin Herrod's defence-splitting through ball for his first goal since his move to the club. Chris Legg fired a late goal for Drimpton but the result was never in doubt.
The Hawks, attempting to win the trophy for the first time in their history, will now entertain Chard United in the quarter-Final on October 22nd.
New manager Joe Carter takes his squad off to Combe A for a Division Three clash at Slades Cross tomorrow.
After a week off, Dave Carter’s Hawkchurch Reserves return to action with the visit of Combe B.
