WEST DORSET LADIES HOCKEY: Beaminster hit Bournemouth for six

Beaminster 6 Bournemouth 4th 0

BEAMINSTER Ladies hockey team began the new season with a comfortable win over Bournemouth 4th’s with Izzy Davies opening her first team account with a hat-trick after doing likewise in the club’s 2nd XI opener last week.

Davies who has joined the club this season could be the striker the club have been looking for to finish the chances that so often have been squandered over the last couple of seasons.

However it was Freyia Crawford that scored the opening goal of what is hoped will be a more rewarding season for the West Dorset team who have struggled recently because of their lack of goals.

Having looked dangerous from the start Beaminster seized on a mistake in the overworked Bournemouth defence when a sloppy free hit in the visitors D was intercepted and Toni Aplin fed Crawford in front of goal.

Although the keeper blocked her effort, the ball squirmed behind her and over the line.

Bournemouth hit back in what proved to be their only real period of pressure in the match with some good attacks down the right side, but after five minutes Beaminster continued their assault on the visitor’s goal.

Such was their superiority that keeper Phoebe Stewart did not touch the ball once in the whole game.

They increased their lead on 23 minutes with the best worked goal of the game. Crawford wide left put in Julia May who danced along the byeline before squaring her pass across goal where Davies neatly slipped the ball wide of the keeper.

The game was effectively over two minutes before the break when Davies pounced on another poor ball played across the face of the D before slotting home after tricking the keeper.

May added a fourth two minutes after the interval when she completed a short corner routine at the near post following her injection, before Danni Donovan scored the fifth from close range after Aplin’s effort had been blocked by the keeper.

Beaminster swarmed all over the Bournemouth side as they created chance after chance, maybe sometimes trying to be too clever around the goal instead of choosing to shoot earlier.

May hit the post before playing in Davies to complete her hat-trick when she left the keeper on the ground with a shimmy, before lifting the ball over her into the net.

This year Rachel Andrews will play outfield with Stewart taking over in goal which will strengthen the defence, which once again looked solid, whilst the midfield of May, Donovan, Ali White and Becky Craddock ran the game and created chances for the forwards.

This was a great start for Beaminster which sees them sit atop the Channel 1 division, but they must not get carried away because there will be harder matches for sure.

However it is always good to get three points from the first match on which they can hopefully build.
