PERRY STREET LEAGUE: Champions held in League opener

PREMIER DIVISION

Crewkerne 1 South Petherton 1

REIGNING Champions Pethy survived a buffeting at Henhayes and, in the end, will have been pleased to head home with a point.

Hosts Crewkerne, back in the top division after one season away, took a 24th minute lead when Jamie Spurdle curled home a free-kick past new Pethy ‘keeper Lee Holt.

Holt had a busy afternoon and made three superb one-on-one saves to deny Tigers’ substitute Adam Swinnerton.

The point saver came via top-scorer Rich Hebditch who netted his eight of the season 20 minutes from time.

Crewkerne manager Nick Murphy was impressed by his back four of Chris Welsh, Ash Larcombe, Dan Baker and new skipper Lee Banks.

Tomorrow Crewkerne have another tough test when they visit Beaminster who look candidates for a top four finish whilst Pethy begin the quest for the Somerset Junior Cup with a home first round tie against Nether Stowey.

Farway United 2 Winsham United 4

FARWAY United manager Andy Baily was “Quietly impressed” by newly promoted Winsham United after seeing his side slip to a 4-2 defeat at Eastlee Park.

Tom Stead put the visitors ahead early on only for Dylan Gair to level. Sam Symes restored the Winsh lead but Ernie Stobbs sent the teams into the interval all square at 2-2.

The second-half saw the Somerset side take control “We didn’t play at all, and they just mullered us” said Baily.

Henry Broome netted number three and Stuart Richards made the points safe.

Winsham entertain Perry Street tomorrow.

Merriott Rovers 2 Perry Street 1

MERRIOTT Rovers recovered from trailing at the break to a Liam Riste strike to earn a first win for new manager Harvey Jennings.

Two goals from new signing Vince Cornish gave Rovers the points. Merriott entertain West & Middle Chinnock tomorrow.

DIVISION ONE

Ilminster Colts went down 3-0 at Netherbury who lost long-serving James Sayers with a snapped hamstring.

A Kris Hastings strike earned Shepton Beauchamp an encouraging point at Beaminster Reserves who were bolstered by a couple of first team regulars.

Misterton, looking to make an immediate return to the Premier Division, earned a point after Ricky Smith and Neil Hawkins scored in a 2-2 draw at Forton Rangers. Andy Stevenson and Leigh Richardson (pen) netted for Rangers.

Craig Steer notched a point saver for Barrington after Lee Wilson had given visitors Perry Street Reserves the lead.

DIVISION TWO

GOALS from Mike Bagg and skipper Luke Chubb saw Chard Rangers come from behind to beat Pymore 2-1.

Crewkerne Rangers were the day’s top-scorers with six in the thrashing of Misterton Reserves. Captain Phil Denslow (3), Simon Denslow (2) and Lloyd Doble bagged the goals with Ash Larcombe replying.

Lee Mears also struck a hat-trick as Dowlish & Donyatt battled back from 2-0 down to eventually settle for a point after a 3-3 draw with Uplyme.

Goals fom newcomer Jake Russell and Karl Diment (pen) gave South Petherton Reserves a winning start at revamped Hinton.

Scott Isaacs has re-signed for Thorncombe. The defender, an ex-Thorns skipper, had a season with Winsham United.

DIVISION THREE

PORTUGUESE striker Marco Quedas, who scored 68 goals in the last two seasons for Luso-Chard, marked his debut for Chard United with both goals in a 2-1 win at Hawkchurch.

Jake Bearpark netted with a second-half spot-kick for the Hawks.

Winsham United Reserves’ player-manager Richard White put his side on the road to victory with the opener against Luso-Chard.

Luis Mesquita squared things up before Brian Tillotson scored twice making Ygor Costa’s late strike a consolation.

DIVISION FOUR

GOALS from Jake Miller, Lee Davis and Craig Whittingham couldn’t save Chard Rangers Reserves from a 4-3 opening day reverse at new team Uplyme Reserves.

To make matters worse the match was delayed as Miller was carted off to Exeter Hospital in an ambulance with an ankle injury.

Toby Knight salvaged a point for Chard United Reserves after Dave Lock had put Barrington Reserves ahead at Jocelyn Park
