BRIDPORT: Bridport U3A 'Royal' Coach trip

A ‘ROYAL’ coach trip to the Isle of Wight was the latest excursion for members of the Bridport and District University of the Third Age (U3A).

More than 30 members went on the trip on Wednesday, July 6th. On the outing they visited Osborne House, the former home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and where the Queen died in 1901 and Carisbrooke Castle, where King Charles 1 was held prisoner and got stuck trying to escape through a window. The outing was organised by Lesley Archibald. Chair Jenny Malyon-Roberts said: “A big thank-you to Lesley for such a great day out – perhaps our best one yet.”

At the group’s June meeting the U3A were visited by guest speaker Peter Knight, who describes himself as a sacred sites guide, dowser and author of seven books “on funky stuff”. Peter gave a talk, to sixty members, entitled “Sacred sites and the Wessex Astrum”. He also signed copies of his latest book after the talk.

Also at the meeting plans were announced for three new interest groups covering astronomy, meditation and playing scrabble.

The U3A is also looking to follow up requests from members to start a Mahjong group. For more information contact Diana Coleridge on 01308 424431.

At present there are thirty-one groups running, details of which appear on the summer newsletter, which is currently being distributed.

You can find out more about the groups by attending the U3A barbecue and social evening, which will be held at St Mary’s Hall and the Community Orchard on Sunday September 4th, starting at 6pm.

“It is a chance for our members and the general public to get to know more about U3A,” said Jenny. “Group leaders will be available to talk about the activities which we run and to encourage new members of join.”

Who knows, some good ideas might come out on new groups that can be set up in future. “We’ll be talking but we will also be listening to what people tell us about how we can continue to develop as the fastest-growing U3A in the South-West,” added Jenny.

The next meeting for all members and friends is on July 26th at 2pm in the Bridport United Church Hall.

Bob Mizon is director of the Mizar Travelling Planetarium and the title of his talk is “Amazing Universe”.
