24th June 2011ILMINSTER: Loads of laughs at Lions fete
By Marion Draper
AN ELEMENTAL day greeted the Ilminster Lions for their annual fete as high winds and showers were punctuated by warm sunshine, which kept one or two of the stallholders away and left those that were there holding on to their gazebos, but there was still a good turnout and the entertainment went ahead as planned.
There were a few new additions to the line up this year and the Taunton Ukulele Strummers Club were very popular with their cheery tunes. Children’s games were also new to the event with some hilarious sack racing reminiscent of that old TV favourite It’s a Knockout as the Lions tried to help one little chap who got completely lost inside his Royal Mail sack.
Despite the gusty wind, the climbing wall was put to good use throughout the day as were the circus skills and the Greenfylde School Maypole still went up thanks to one of the teachers lying on the base.
Catherine Bartlett Irish dancers made a welcome return along with the Appalacian dancers and the Trojan Twirlers. The ever popular John Gudge added to the entertainment with his singing and mouth organ skills, John is currently looking for a pianist to accompany him and his many ventures.
The Royal British Legion had an interesting taste challenge on their stall. To celebrate their 90th anniversary, they had chocolate cake made to a wartime recipe with no eggs to compare with a modern cake; many preferred the war time version.
The Army cadets were fundraising for themselves this year, their company have to raise £3,000 for to join in a massive trip to Euro Disney, with 500 cadets from across the county going on the adventure.
With plate smashing , the bouncy castle and stalls selling their wares and a nice cream tea to top it off, it was a good afternoon out.
The Lions are already planning their next major event which will be the annual 10K run for charity in November and entries are coming in. This extremely popular event is limited to 400 runners so if you are entering it pays to book early. Call 01460 259711 or email
