LYME REGIS: Hub's bid for £60K Lotto funding

By Geoff Baker

ORGANISERS of the Lyme Regis bid to win £60,000 Lottery funding to get the town’s new youth club open at last plan to paper the town – and the planet – to win support for The Hub campaign.

Every man, woman and child of Lyme will be “recruited” to help Lyme win the cash that will enable the former Boys’ Club site in  Church Street to become an exciting, creative and stimulating home for the young people of the area.

The Big Lottery Fund has announced that The Hub  will be one of six finalists in an ITV West Country contest to win a chunk of the National Lottery’s Jubilee People’s Millions, as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.

Projects from Cornwall to Dorset will compete for a share of the royal roll-out, to be televised later this month.

Lyme will be pitched against Portland Gig Rowing Club on Tuesday, June 28th and the audience will be asked to vote for their winner (calls will cost 11p from a landline).

The Big Lottery Fund will release special telephone vote numbers that will be secret until 9am on June 28th.

The Hub’s bid organisers plan to name the date “Hub Tuesday” and keep it at the forefront of everyone’s minds with a blitz of promotion all over the town.

Posters will go up across Lyme, promotional videos will be filmed for networking through YouTube, a Hub-linked world record attempt will be made with the help of the whole town, and a cheeky but eye-grabbing stunt is planned to grab everyone’s  attention.

Project development officer Fran Williams said: “The point of the campaign is very simple - to get as many phone votes as possible made for Lyme on ‘Hub Tuesday’ and, to achieve that, The Hub needs you.

“Each person will be allowed to vote up to 10 times, if we like, but if every pupil at Woodroffe and all of our residents make just one call for Lyme then we’ll be well on the way to getting the prize that will make a long dream come true, and give our sons, daughters and grandchildren a great club to go to.

“Community caring is one of the great strengths of Lyme Regis and surrounding areas, and we know everybody will follow the fantastic lead of the local press and pull together to help.

“All the details and updates will be available on The Hub’s new website www.hublyme.co.uk

Already, the campaign has gone global on social networking site Facebook, and is winning the backing of members of The Lyme Regis Usual Suspects Association - made up of  former Woodroffe pupils - who are now living in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Malaysia, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

“Lyme Regis is globally famous and we’re making sure it will be globally voted for too,” added Mrs Williams.

“Every vote will make a difference no matter where it is made from. Lyme matters to so many people in so many places and together we can have a lot of fun winning this.”

Organisers are asking all in the town – school pupils, businesses and residents – to help promote “Hub Tuesday” in any ways they can - blitzing friends for support on Facebook, phone-made videos to post on YouTube, campaign posters in the windows of homes, shops and pubs and whatever it takes to make the phones ring hot on June 28th.
