1st June 2011BRIDPORT: Touch of gold
Local artist Jemma Thompson, who works from a studio at St Michael’s Trading Estate, gave a demonstration to Bridport Art Society members recently of signwriting and the use of gold leaf.
Using sable and cow hair brushes, Jemma painted the letters onto plywood coated with blackboard paint. She then had her audience enthralled as she cut the delicate sheets of golf leaf with a knife on her gilder’s cushion.
The fragile material is then transferred very carefully with a ‘tip’ brush to the board, breathing on it to help it to adhere. Fingers must not touch the leaf or it will later tarnish.
It was a most interesting evening in which Jemma left the audience with the amusing vision of her working on her latest project, a mirror, dressed all in white with a pillowcase over her head to avoid being distracted by her own reflection.
