21st April 2011DORCHESTER: Sandra completes London Marathon
Sandra Hood, a vegan NHS Diabetes Specialist Dietician from Crossways near Dorchester, took part in the 31st annual London Marathon on Sunday, April 17th, Sandra took part alongside 36,000 other runners and completed the race in just three hours 41 minutes and 50 seconds.
A dedicated Compassion in World Farming supporter, Sandra ran the marathon to highlight the plight of animals farmed for food and defend the planned 2012 ban on barren battery cages.
Sandra said: “I am over the moon. I wanted to complete it in under 4 hours and show that a vegan diet helps me to be fit and healthy.
However, while most people do eat meat, Compassion in World Farming really is the voice of the millions of farm animals that are suffering in factory farms and that's why I wanted to support them. When I was running I was thinking of the animals in factory farms shut up, and that kept me going, plus the crowds were wonderful. They cheered me on.’’
As Sandra pounded the streets of London, members of Compassionate Dorset of which Sandra is also a member, held street collections in Weymouth and Dorchester town centre and handed out Good Food Shopping Guides to local shoppers.
They raised £200 for the charity's Easter battery cage campaign “The Big Move”.
So far Sandra has raised over £900 for Compassion in World Farming. To support Sandra visit www.justgiving.com/sandrahood.
