FOOTBALL: Set-back for Millwey

By Howard Larcombe

WITH Axminster Town left clicking their heels by the free weekend caused by Buckfastleigh’s withdrawal from the league the spotlight fell on the Tigers Reserves.

And, Kevin Turner’s  side didn’t disappoint and returned from Winkleigh with all three points courtesy of goals from Michael Beer and top scorer Joel Gostling in a 2-0 win – the Tigers first victory “on the road” since November.

The win sees the Axminster second string jump four places to sixth in Devon and Exeter Senior Division Three.

Axminster Thirds are still seeking their first win in 2009 after a 5-2 reverse at mid-table Priory. Ben Turner and Howard Midworth were on target for the Tigers.

This weekend the first team, sitting fifth in the South-west Peninsula League Division One (East), visit Totnes and Dartington’s Foxhole ground looking to chase down a league double, having won the corresponding home match 4-1 back in November.

Meanwhile the quirky D&E fixture computer was at it again and  Winkleigh are the visitors to Sector Lane in a reverse of last weekend’s match. Axminster Thirds visit Oak FC.

Millwey Rise’ Perry Street League Division Two promotion hopes received a dent after a 3-2 defeat at the hands of rivals Ilminster Town Colts at First Avenue.

This Saturday Millwey turn their attention to the Daisy Hutchings Cup and a tough looking quarter-final with in-from  Shepton Beauchamp, unbeaten since October, on the wide-open spaces of their cavernous Brimgrove Lane ground.

Rise have never lifted the 38-yeard-old trophy. Could this be the year?
Millwey Reserves welcomed Danny Larcombe back from injury and the diminutive striker scored twice but couldn’t prevent his side from slipping to a 3-2 in the local derby at Hawkchurch.

Glenn Harding, Gavin Herrod and Dean Turner were on target for the Hawks, who moved up to second in Division Three.

This weekend the Rise Reserves welcome Chard Rangers Reserves to First Avenue whilst Hawkchurch have a crucial promotion clash with visiting Beaminster Reserves.

Goals from Amber Clarke (2) and Jenny Bell helped the LA ladies to a 3-1 win over Okehampton Argyle in the Devon  Womens’ League Division Two at Boss Hill Cross on Sunday.
