FOOTBALL: Uplyme promotion bid gathers pace

By Howard Larcombe

TWO goals from Gavin Fowler took Uplyme a step closer a return to Division One of the Perry Street League after a 2-1 win over promotion rivals Perry Street Reserves at Venlake.

The victory means Uplyme remain third but still have a game in hand on both Perry Street and top-of-the-table Ilminster Town Colts. The Swallows are without a game on Saturday.

Lyme Regis first team returned with a point from their visit to Beaminster after a 1-1 draw. Skipper Adam Caddy bagged his fifth goal of the season.

This Saturday the Seasiders have one of their biggest games of the season when they visit Combe Reserves in the quarter-final of the Challenge Cup. Merriott Rovers await the winners in the semi-finals.

It won’t be easy for Lyme who, despite having the upper hand in each game, have three times failed to beat the youthful Saints side that have surprised many people this season under the careful guidance of Perry Street League legend Mark Parris.

Lyme Regis Reserves’ hopes of landing the Division One title for the first time since the back-to-back triumphs of the late 90s took a dent as they were beaten by league leaders Barrington 2-1 at the Davey Fort.
A vintage Will Thomson goal looked to have salvaged a point from the game but the visitors preserved their perfect league record and look odds on for an immediate return to the top flight.

Lyme Bantams return to action with the visit of Luso-Chard. The Portuguese side will be in good spirits having just landed a place in their first ever cup final following a 2-0 win over Crewkerne Reserves in the John Fowler Cup at the weekend.

Charmouth set-up a classic local derby semi-final with neighbours Lyme Reserves after a 3-1 extra-time victory at Forton Rangers. Journeyman Matt Beechey, an ex-Seasider, was among the Robins scorers.

This weekend second-placed Charmouth visit league leaders Barrington.
Charmouth Reserves will be pleased to see the back of Misterton Reserves after conceding five to the South Somerset outfit for the second week running. The Robins entertain Winsham Reserves at the weekend.

* The date has been set for Lyme Regis Under 11s Dorset County Cup Final. The Young Seasiders will take on Bournemouth-based Kingswood Youth at Ferndown FC at 11am on Sunday, March 5th.

Photo: BEFORE their 2-1 win over Perry Street Reserves on Saturday, Uplyme Football Club presented their President, Mr Fred Smith, with a signed West Ham Shirt to celebrate his 80th Birthday.  Fred has been associated with Uplyme Football Club for the past 40 years - as player, manager, treasurer, chairman and now President. Chairman  Gavin Fowler thanked Fred for all his hard work for the club over the years, and said his support at the games was appreciated by all the players.
