13th August 2009SAILING: Successful regatta at Lyme
By Howard Larcombe
The Annual Lyme Regis Sailing Club Regatta went ahead as planned as weather conditions eased.
Lyme Regis Sailing Club Regatta opened on Saturday morning to wet weather with very poor visibility but a promising weather forecast from the BBC Met Office.
They were right and by the start of the first race at 2pm, the rain had cleared with a settled northwesterly breeze that allowed Race Officer Rob Wiscombe to set the course in front of the town.
Club Secretary, Sally Holman, provided a commentary for spectators to help make sense of 60 sailing boats racing around the waters.
Lyme Regis Sailing Club’s reputation for providing exciting racing brought visiting sailors from all over the country as well as many of our own local sailors competing. The fleet included sailors ranging in age from 10 up to 79.
Two races of the series were completed on Saturday afternoon with the day ending in sunshine and a tasty BBQ, although the sailors were all a bit too tired to indulge in the planned tug-of-war!
Sunday morning started with sunshine and a settled south-westerly breeze allowing the morning race to take place in almost ideal conditions.
The south-westerly again enabled the course to be set along the front of town, making it easy for spectators to see the action. Once again, keen competition ensued with exciting racing.
After a break for lunch, it was the Championship of the Day and the culmination of the Regatta where all the boats cross the line together.
The weather gods smiled on Lyme providing the conditions for which we are renowned in the sailing world – a Force 4 with great waves, providing a perfect high end sailing wind which continued to develop making very challenging conditions for some of the visiting sailors from inland reservoirs and allowing the local Lyme sailors to excel and taking many of the top places.
A truly successful regatta weekend with a great atmosphere and enhanced by the launch of the new Gig and then a couple of specimen gig races in front of the towns to the backdrop of a variety of sailing boats.
