13th August 2009FOOTBALL:Charmouth rocked by O'Hare resignation
By Howard Larcombe
CHARMOUTH football club have appointed Mike walton as their new club manager following Tommy' OHare's resignation.
Charmouth Football club’s pre-season preparations have been thrown into disarray with the news that first team manager Tommy O’Hare (pictured below) has had to resign the post due to personal reasons.
Committee member and sponsor Mike Smith has confirmed, however, that the Robins have been quick appoint a replacement. He said: “We are very pleased to have appointed Mike Walton, who has been with the club in the first team squad for several years, as first team manager.”
“Mike is now building his squad ready for our first season back in the Premier Division and is confident that we will do well.”
Training is continuing on Tuesday evenings at 6.30pm at The Playing Field, Barrs Lane, Charmouth.
“Any players interested in playing for the club in the Premier Division or for the Reserves, who we are hopeful will be pushing for promotion from Division Four this year, please come along to meet the new manager and the present players.
Any potential goalkeepers or defenders would be particularly welcome and we are seeking a regular linesman for the reserve team.
For more information please contact Mike Walton on 07549011353 or Reserves manager Andy Tipping on 07515868601.
Mr Smith is also keen to quash rumours that O’Hares resignation may have lead to the club folding; “These rumours are totalling untrue - We are right behind Mike who is confident that he can build a successful team for the coming season based on the nucleus of last year’s squad along with some new defensive additions.
n INJURED striker Neil MacKenzie has been appointed as Lyme Regis Bantams Assistant Manager.
MacKenzie, who is currently recuperating from cruciate knee surgery, will give support to current player-manager Rob Larcombe who enters his second season in charge of the Seasiders third string.
The appointment will also mean Larcombe (21) would be able to accept any possible call-up from the Reserve team.
Another change to the Bantams set-up sees Wallace Blackmore awarded the captaincy. Blackmore, who along with pick-of-the-league defender Stuart King, makes a welcome return to the Lyme ranks after spells with Uplyme and Axminster Town takes over from Ben Strong who will look to concentrate on continuing his promising goalscoring form that earned him the Bantams Golden Boot last season.
The Bantams had another useful pre-season run-out in beating the newly formed Axminster Town U18s 2-1 at the Davey Fort on Wednesday.
Strong and Patryk Skibinski grabbed the goals for the Seasiders. Midfielder Skibinski, who has moved to the area, added some much need strength to the central midfield area and looks to be quite an asset.
Six times winners Lyme Regis have been handed a home draw in the first round of the Coronation Cup. New manager Robin Townsend and his side will welcome Ilminster Town Reserves to the Davey Fort on Saturday, September 26th.
The Seasiders, who produced a poor display and were knocked out by eventual winners Combe Reserves at the semi-final stage last season, will have fond memories of meeting the Blues in this competition.
The two met the last time Lyme lifted the trophy back in 2004 when goals from Tim Edwards (2), Jason Hawker, Graham White, Lee Cleal and Ben Finnigan secured a record 6-0 triumph in a bad-tempered Boxing day final at Slades Cross.
Neighbouring Charmouth have been awarded a bye.
Meanwhile Lyme Reserves, who went close on four fronts but ultimately ended up emptihanded last season, have been given a bye through to the quarter final of the Division One cup.
