DEVON DIVISION D
Uplyme & Lyme Regis 1st XI
260-7 beat Whitchurch
134 all out by 126 runs.
A superb batting performance laid the foundations for a conclusive win for Uplyme & Lyme Regis 1st XI from their trip to the heart of West Devon.
The visitors, boosted by the returned from suspension of skipper Ashley Caddy, had first use of soggy track.
Things started badly with openers Mark Batey and Rob Thom back in the hutch and only 13 runs on the board.
However the innings, and indeed the match, was turned around by a magnificent 131 third wicket partnership between Ben (pictured below) and Jedd Whittington who both clipped their first half-centuries of the current campaign.
The brothers showed great patience and shot selection in compiling the best first XI partnership of the season before Jedd departed for 64.
Two runs later Ben was also dismissed, again for 64, caught and bowled for the second game in succession, to leave the East Devon club in need of another stand to push the total on past the 200 mark.
Jerry Sims added to the mini-collapse with a duck before Caddy was joined at the wicket by his veice-captain Derek Wellman. The two then proceeded to add a crucial 64 run partnership before Caddy was cleaned-up by John Heatley with the score on 211-6.
Wellman, who finished unbeaten on a season’s best 46, continued to shepherd the lower-middle order putting on another 41 with Bruce Maltby (15).
The final total of 260-7 was far in excess of Uplyme’s previous best of the season (211-6 v Ipplepen) and is beleived to be the club’s first XIs best for five years.
In reply, Caddy soon had John Meadows caught at the wicket for five by keeper Jedd Whittington.
The struggle continued and Whitchurch limped along to 52-5 with Neil Price, coming on at first change, chipping in with a couple of wickets.
Despite still being in excess of 200 runs in arrears the hosts showed some resolve with Tom Sherrill (61) and Brian Neale adding 79 runs for the sixth wicket.
But Caddy returned to remove Sherrill and e innings collapsed with five wickets falling for just three runs.
Price finished with the best analysis (4-28), and moved through the 20-wicket barrier in the process, with able support coming from Caddy (3-52) and Steve Batey (2-27).
Caddy was pleased to see the 20 points safely in the bag, he said: “That result just eases the pressure on us slightly, but it’s still tight down near the bottom (just six points separate four teams).
Despite the pitch being something of a mudheap it was a relief to see the batting finally click. Jedd and Ben batted really well to put us firmly in control. We had a wobble after this losing three wickets for as many runs, but myself and Derek (Wellman) got us back on track, I enjoy batting with him, we’ve had a few decent partnerships in the past.
I reckon two wins from our final gmaes will be enough to keep us up.”

Uplyme & Lyme Regis 2nds v Exmouth III - match abandoned, waterlogged pitch.
The drainage problem at the KGV playing field ‘resurfaced’ once again at the weekend.
Huge pools of rainwater gathered all over the square making play a complete non-starter despite the weather clearing by the scheduled start time of 2pm.
