23rd July 2009Special rally day nearly ends in disaster
CLASSIC car enthusiasts gathered in Weymouth for their 21st charity fundraising rally and one member suffered a minor disaster.
The motorists were returning to Lodmoor Park from the annual Weymouth Vehicle Preservation Society rally around Dorset when drivers scrambled to extinguish a car which had caught alight.
The incident saw flames billowing from the engine compartment of the Jenson Interceptor III, thought to have been started by an overheated coil during the 85 mile drive.
The event was, however, only a small part of the day, which saw 80 drivers raising over £800 for Dorset ME Society and Dorchester Scouts by completing the drive and competing in the display.
The society was started 25 years ago as a means of meeting like-minded enthusiasts, and they have raised £35,405 since 1981 for local charities.
The event was also attended by the Mayor Councillor Anne Kenwood and her escort Chris Kenwood.
