17th July 2009Pupils add a touch of colour to the town
PUPILS from a Portland school gardening club have been helping the council put in the ground work for a stunning floral display aimed at brightening up the island.
Now pupils from Underhill Junior School and residents alike only have a short wait until the flowerbeds in Victoria Gardens becomes awash with the colour of hundreds of African marigolds.
The pupils planted 250 Yellow Perfection marigolds into a diamond design at the centre of the bed and 350 Orange Durango Bee marigolds were split between the triangular corners to create an eye-catching display when the huge puff-balls bloom this August.
Val Vincent, who runs the school’s gardening club, accompanied the children.
Councillor Brendan Webster, brief holder for Leisure, Tourism and Community facilities, said his thanks to the pupils hard work in creating the dazzling display for peopleto look forward to this summer.
He added: “I certainly intend to see it. This is just the sort of project that helps young people make a difference and learning how it feels to be able to make a difference is an invaluable lesson in life.”
