17th July 2009Police officers reach the peaks
INTREPID police officers from Weymouth have taken and beaten the challenge of climbing three of the UK’s tallest peaks for charity.
The group of 10 police officers from Weymouth Police Station completed the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Weymouth and Portland Friends of Chernobyl Children.
The group included six Police Community Support Officers three Police Constables and a Sergeant completing the gruelling challenge in under 24 hours.
PC Kevin Eames said: “The difficult part was running up and down three mountains in just 24 hours. However, we have been training very hard for the past two months and we all took it very seriously.
“The team was made up of police officers of various ages and ability therefore, for some of them, it was a really great challenge.”
As a team they conquered Snowdon up and down in 3 1/2 hours before driving overnight to Scafell Pike, which they defeated in just over five hours.
The teams then raced in pairs to the top of Ben Nevis, with PCSO’s Ade Walker and Katie Wakely surmounting in two hours three minutes.
Just 12 minutes later it was Lucy Allmond and Graeme Williams all four playing in the snow at the top to celebrate. PCSO’s Tony Johnson, Steph Weedon PC Mike Green and Sergeant Tony Smith all reached the summit within that 24 hour clock.
The Weymouth and Portland Friends of Chernobyl Children is a registered charity that organises visits to the UK for children from Chernobyl.
In 2009 they organiseda seventh annual visit for the children when they were treated to days out at local attractions, police and fire stations and trips to London.
