BRIDPORT: Crackdown on drunk drivers

DRINK and drug drivers are being warned they face a prison sentence as Dorset Police launch a month long campaign to stop them today (Wednesday).

The month-long summer drink and drug driving campaign will see increased traffic patrols as well as roadside checks taking place across Dorset during the month, as part of the national Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) campaign.

Every driver that is involved in a collision during the campaign – which begins today and ends at 11.59pm on Thursday, June 30th – will be breath tested, irrespective of whether they are suspected of drink driving or not.

Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, Head of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit, said: “I am particularly keen to appeal to drivers under the age of 30.

“Our statistics show that drivers under 30 are continuing to risk their lives, and the lives of other innocent road users, more than any other age group by drinking and driving.

“I’d encourage the friends or family of any driver that has drunk alcohol and is planning on driving to do everything they can to make sure that person does not get behind the wheel.

“If a member of the public suspects someone is driving or about to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they should dial 999 immediately and report the details to the police so that we can intercept that vehicle.

“Also, if a member of the public has information about regular drink or drug drivers, they should contact Dorset Police in confidence on 01202 or 01305 222222 to report this. Alternatively, members of the public can call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.”

The legal consequences of being caught drink driving include a minimum 12 month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.

Chief Inspector Nichols added: “My advice to drivers is simple – don’t get behind the wheel after drinking any alcohol at all, as research has shown that even one drink can impair the ability to drive.

“If you’re going out drinking over the summer, take simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver in your group of friends or arranging overnight accommodation.

“Do not risk your life, or the lives of innocent road users, for the sake of a drink this summer.”
