4th March 2011ILMINSTER: Prestigious award for local butchers
By Marion Draper
ILMINSTER butchers, Bonners have been named regional winners in the new category of the Countryside Alliance Awards.
Owner Clinton Bonner has been invited to attend a special reception in the House of Lords at the end of the month, along with the other regional winners.
At the reception, Countryside Alliance chief executive Alice Barnard, will announce the overall British champions. The alliance relishes the opportunity to take a taste of the countryside to Westminster, to show politicians what talented and dedicated men and women are keeping rural communities together.
Described as the rural Oscars, the sixth annual Countryside Alliance Awards gained a record number of nominations in 2010 and contained an inspiring crop of businesses, producers and characters. Regional judging continued until early February.
The awards celebrate the characters, produce, traditions and enterprise of the countryside through the people who work so hard to keep it going.
Head judge Alison Hawes said: “The warmth of the welcome at Bonners was as highly recommended to us as the quality of the meat, and one fan of the shop even said they would not even consider buying meat from anywhere else, which is high praise.
“The meat is of course fantastic, locally produced and certainly the best of the West. This is the first year we have run a dedicated butcher category and from the reaction Bonners of Ilminster generated, I know we were right to do so. Old fashioned customer service, banter, a place where everyone knows your name, and quality local produce.
“The high street butcher continues to go through many challenges, but they are valued and incredibly popular members of their communities - Bonners is a shining example.”
