31st December 2010SEAVINGTON: Hunts with no horses
By Marion Draper
SEAVINGTON Hunt was reduced to hounds only for the traditional Boxing Day meet in Crewkerne this year, along with many others across the country.
Despite the overnight thaw, the conditions were still too dangerous for horses, with water sitting over ice patches and many horse boxes unable to make the journey.
Disappointed horse lovers in the crowd, gathered along the town’s Market Street, had to be satisfied with a different spectacle and clapped and cheered as huntsman John Macey and whipper-in Tony Collins ran with the hounds out of town, closely followed by master Jereme Darke and other members of the hunt, all on foot.
A similar scene was laid out in Chard and Ilminster as both the Cotley Harriers and the Taunton Vale Hunt also left their horses in the stables.
In Chard there was a small anti-hunting demonstration as the hunt supporters are still hoping for a repeal of the anti-hunting bill in Parliament.
