1st December 2010BRIDPORT: Concerns over badger cull proposals
THE Dorset Badger Group are urging animal lovers to share their views about a proposed cull.
The government has been proposing a mass cull of badgers in an attempt to control Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle, but the Dorset Badger Group fear this could lead to the animals suffering needlessly painful deaths.
Group chairman, Elizabeth James explained: “What people may not realise is that the government now proposes to licence farmers to shoot free running badgers. This will result in many animals being wounded and suffering painful and lingering deaths.
“The government has already spent £50 million of our money on a badger culling trial, supervised by the Independent Scientific Group, and the ISG concluded that the cull was not effective in controlling bTB and in some cases made the situation worse.
“Improved cattle husbandry and the use of vaccination would solve the problem without the wholesale killing of healthy wild animals.”
Members of the public have until December 8th to respond to the government’s consultation about the cull.
