8th September 2010WEYMOUTH: Prestigious role for Budmouth
by Harry Walton
BUDMOUTH Technology College in Weymouth is to spearhead courses on leadership and innovation across the South West.
The award-winning site, which has more than 1,500 students, will also be one of eight flagship education hubs for such courses across the country.
Principal David Akers said he was delighted at the “great honour” Budmouth had achieved.
He added: “We were identified as one of the top performing specialist schools which enabled us to take on a second speciality.
“We chose Raising Attainment in Partnership, enabling us to focus not just on ourselves but on partner schools in the Weymouth and Portland area.
“This led to us being offered an opportunity to apply for leadership hub status which we did and inspectors then put us through an intense two-day check which we passed with flying colours.”
Mr Akers said the go-ahead saw a lot of summer holiday work and preparation led by senior leader Peter Hudson.
He added: “We are due to start our leadership courses next week (correct).
“It is the start of a much wider role for Budmouth because those courses will not only be delivered here but across the south west.”
He said that staff from Budmouth would be visiting other south west schools to set up leadership courses with a sustainable future.
Mr Akers added: “The leadership courses are for a variety of managerial levels from directors down to middle managers, department heads and other positions.”
He hopes the accolade of leadership status will open up more opportunities for Budmouth on the national education stage.
Mr Akers said: “Not only is this a great honour but it is a real recognition for all the work we have done as a college in developing leadership.”
