2nd September 2010DORCHESTER: Extravaganza in the gardens
The Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Leslie Phillips, accompanied by his wife Vonty, opened the Rethink Extravaganza in the county town’s borough gardens.
This was an opportunity to have fun with the various activities on offer while at the same time learning more about Rethink and the Time to Change campaign, to end mental health discrimination.
Rethink is dedicated to helping everyone affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life.
Mental health problems affect one in four people, and there is still a great deal of stigma attached to it that organisations like Rethink are determined to overcome.
The Kiosk in the borough gardens is operated very successfully by Rethink.
The Kiosk is a workplace opportunity which offers a stepping stone back into both the community and the workplace. They aim to help people achieve personal goals in everyday life, to support people on what can be a long recovery journey, and raise awareness in the wider community of the problems faced by those with mental health issues.
The afternoon offered live music from Bitter and Twisted and a treasure hunt with the opportunity to win a scooter. There was also face painting, a raffle, information stands, and refreshments available from the Kiosk.
