2nd September 2010DORCHESTER: A taste of France in Dorchester
by Anita Harries
The sun finally managed to make an appearance for the first day of the three day French Market held in South Street Dorchester.
Trade was brisk for the stall holders as they brought French wares and cuisine to the county town.
Among the clothes, hats, brightly coloured scarves, belts and bags were shoes, catwalk jewellery, table clothes and scented soaps.
Toys joined vintage music and posters hot foot from Paris, along with beautifully carved wooden roses and a variety of cook ware.
The French are well known for their culinary skills, and there was plenty of food to sample.
Crepes of various flavours tempted shoppers as did the paella, and the garlic prawns and mushrooms. Some were swayed by “la tartiflette” a wonderful speciality from the French Alps while others tried the amazing food from the flammkuchen, freshly cooked in a wooden stove and eaten hot.
And there was food a plenty waiting to be snapped up by visitors to the market and taken home to feed the family.
Sweets and biscuits, freshly baked bread, cheeses, olives and sausages lined up alongside onions, garlic and pate to seduce the palate and get the creative juices flowing.
Aromas reminiscent of France and the Mediterranean drifted up South Street, transporting shoppers across the Channel and bringing the very best France has to offer to the town of Dorchester.
This superb shopping experience has become a permanent fixture in Dorchester’s calendar, and gives local people and visitors alike the chance to try new food, snap up the latest fashions from the continent, and give their conversational French an airing.
