2nd September 2010UPLYME & LYME REGIS CRICKET: Review of the 2010 season
Uplyme and Lyme Regis Cricket Club have had an up and down season with both 1st and 2nd XI league teams being relegated.
The 1st XI never recovered from a disappointing start to the season. This was mainly due to non-availability of key players as the football season seemed to “go on forever”.
The 2nd XI struggled to get a team on a number of occasions. However, the relegation to D Division East will mean that next year they will not have to travel too far.
The Sunday side had a few games called off or abandoned due to bad weather. But when they played they did well winning the majority of their games.
We continued to develop our Youth Section set up in conjunction with Woodroffe School and its feeder schools. The Under 13s and Under 15s both came third in their respective West Dorset leagues and the Under 11s came second behind Dorchester.
However, they got their own back with an excellent win against Dorchester in the final of the West Dorset Archie Masters Cup.
The club held its annual President’s XI game and Sponsors’ Day on Sunday, August 22nd. The weather forecast was very encouraging so we all looked forward to a good, fun day of cricket.
But alas it was not to be; at about 12:30pm the heavens opened and it rained most of the afternoon. Some 20 or so hopeful cricketers and sponsors turned up to watch the rain and enjoy the club’s hospitality.
As always when several ex-players get together the stories of past glories and indiscretions flowed which will provide tremendous input to the memorial magazine we are planning for our 125th anniversary next year.
Highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of a very generous cheque from one of our sponsors Philip Evans of PE Media to the president, Andy Mason. This was very timely as we had just discovered that the trusty old mower had finally given up the ghost and had to be replaced.
The Town Mill Cheesemonger’s decision to provide a waxed extra mature cheddar in cricket ball red to the batsmen who hit the first six in a home league game was very successful and we were pleased to report that 10 sixes cheeses have been won.
The club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, patrons and supporters for their ongoing support for the club which is invaluable. Let’s hope that the cricket improves next season.
