ABBOTSBURY: New playground for Abbotsburyby Anita Harries
The children of Abbotsbury have a new £100,000 play area, thanks to funding from the Big Lottery and the determination of one young lady from the village - Lucy Bailey. There is a beautifully rustic feel about this playground, beneath St. Catherine’s Chapel, and it has been very cleverly designed to create an area the youngsters from the village can be proud of. And there is plenty to enable children with disabilities to join in the fun.
Abbotsbury Parish Chairman Henry Ford said: “It is wonderful how this has all come together and after a few unavoidable delays it is finally open. It couldn’t have happened without the village pulling together and helping to raise funds to make this wonderful playground a place where children can go and enjoy themselves.” The playground was officially opened by Woody and Buzz Lightyear, who took a few hours out from Toy Story 3 to make it an extra special occasion. Kris Hallett from Dorset Community Action was also present and said a few words before the ribbon was cut and the festivities began. “I was delighted to help Lucy with this amazing project. The village owes Lucy a huge debt for providing their children with such a wonderful facility. She put so much energy into making it happen she can feel very proud of her achievements.” And as well as enjoying the new play equipment, there was plenty for the children, and their parents, to make this a really memorable day. A drumming workshop, the Juno Belly Dancers, face painting and glitter tattoos, magical story telling, model balloon making and a raffle had all been organised as a thank you for the effort put in by the village and a welcome to all the children. Refreshments included hot dogs, ice creams, crepes and homemade cakes, there was a visit by two ponies, and the sun shone down on a new era of playtime fun for the young people of Abbotsbury.
