BRIDPORT: Singers unroll ambitious and exciting programme

ON Tuesday, September 14th at 7.30pm, rehearsals (at Bridport United Church hall) will begin on Haydn’s Creation Mass, Handel’s Chandos Anthem No. 8 and Bach’s Cantata No. 11 for performance on December 4th with full orchestra by the New Elizabethan Singers.

To celebrate Olympic Year and West Dorset’s role in the nautical events the Singers are planning to perform Vaughan Williams’ magificent Sea Symphony, again with full orchestra, on February 8th 2012. This year is also the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne and they are planning a stirring, celebratory programme of Coronation music in her honour on June 16th.

In addition the New Elizabthan singers are planning to continue their long standing tradition of annual Christmas Carol Concerts at St John’s West Bay.

The Singers are indebted to their audiences, friends, supporters and sponsors who enable them to stage such exciting and varied programmes. One of their most generous sponsors, Bridport music lover Alan Williams, is keen to help perform Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in 2013 – so watch this space!

The Singers will need a strong choir for these ‘substantial’ pieces and are always glad to welcome beginners who would like to ‘have a go’. The auditioning process is informal, non-threatening and is not carried out until new members have had a good chance to experience what the Singers are all about. Come along and hear for yourselves!

Existing members and anyone interested in taking up choral singing are cordially welcomed to the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, September 7th at 7.30pm in Bridport United Church Hall. The main item under discussion will be the exciting and varied programmes of music currently proposed for performance over the next few years, followed by the playing of extracts from recordings of the forthcoming programme.
