1st September 2010DORCHESTER: Jeremy Musson talk at Dorset County Museum
Jeremy Musson, architectural historian, writer and broadcaster, is coming to Dorset County Museum to give a talk on his new book, ‘Up and Down Stairs, The history of the country house servant’.
This lively, general history of the English country house servant looks at 600 years of British country house life, and helps us understand the activities and populations of country houses over the centuries. Drawing on both published and unpublished sources, the book celebrates the authentic voice of the servants themselves, through extracts from memoirs, letters and other records, and explores some of the elaborate rituals and hierarchies of noble household’s right up until the late 20th century.
Jeremy has lectured at many venues including Cambridge University, Tate Britain and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In the past few years he has co-written and presented 14 programmes of the Curious House Guest series for BBC2. He was also a dinner party guest in Edwardian Supersize Me.
The talk takes place at 7.30pm on Friday September 10th. Tickets cost £5 and are available now from Dorset County Museum. The evening will include a book signing by Jeremy, and copies of his books will be available to buy.
