21st July 2010DORCHESTER: Rotary host charity auction
by Anita Harries
THE Rotary Club of Dorchester Casterbridge have been raising money for Rotary International’s worldwide appeal to eradicate Polio by holidaing a chairty auction.
The auction, which took place at Kingston Maurwood Agricultural College, saw a grand total of 50 lots open to bids from the assembled guests.
Attended by the Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Leslie Phillips and his wife Vonty, guests were treated to a welcome drink and a buffet before the serious business of the evening began.
An emotional appeal by Keith Barnard Jones for people to dig deep into their pockets and give generously preceded the auction.
He said: “The last hurdle is always the hardest. Eradication of polio is almost complete, but we need to reach those children living in the remote outposts of the countries where polio still exists, before our job is over.”
There followed a superb evening of bidding fun.
In charge of the proceedings was Garry Batt of Dukes Auction House. Lots included a two course Sunday carvery for two at the Fox Inn, Ansty, and a Harbourside Sunday lunch experience for two at Vaughan’s in Weymouth, hampers, wine, whisky and a novelty celebration cake. Boat trips, car trips, pictures, bags, first edition books, the list was endless, with some items being snapped up with far more enthusiasm than others.
