21st July 2010DORCHESTER: Bands meet for twinners' concert
The superb sound of brass bands playing filled the Borough Gardens in Dorchester as the town’s very own Durnovaria Silver Band played a joint concert with their counterparts from Lubbecke – the Schutzen Musik Corps.
Since twinning between the two towns began in 1973, the bands have exchanged visits on countless occasions and provided many hours of musical enjoyment in both countries.
Over here for a long weekend, the band from Lubbecke played for an hour in the bandstand.
Among their repertoire were songs from the musicals including My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins.
It was delightful to sit in the sunshine and listen to this young band play, and they were extremely good.
The concert was introduced by the Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Leslie Phillips, who is also president of the Durnovaria Silver Band.
Extending a welcome to the guests from Germany, he hoped that those who had come along would gain as much pleasure from the music as from their wonderful surroundings.
Durnovaria’s very own Liz Carter led her players in a rousing rendition of the German National Anthem before the two bands continued playing together well into the afternoon.
