21st July 2010DORCHESTER: Dorchester shows compassion for animals
by Anita Harries
People across the county town were invited to join Compassionate Dorset for the Eden Project’s “The Big Lunch” held in the Borough Gardens, Dorchester.
In aid of Compassion in World Farming, the fundraiser was hosted by dedicated supporter and local contact Anna Celeste Watson, to raise money to help ensure higher welfare conditions for animals farmed for food.
The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Leslie Phillips, and his wife Vonty, before an emotional and hard hitting speech by Joyce D’Silva, the Public Affairs Officer for Compassion in World Farming.
She highlighted the work carried out by the group and their mission to end factory farming by 2050.
They want the world’s 50 billion chickens reared for meat out of crammed, dark sheds, and the world’s six billion laying hens out of cages.
They aim to end the long distance transportation and export of live animals, end the use of cages and crates for sows and put a stop to painful mutilations such as tail docking and the tooth clipping of piglets.
The Big Lunch aimed to bring together a community of farm animal lovers to enjoy a picnic in the bright sunshine.
As well as an abundance of literature on the subject, there was a bake sale, a raffle, face painting for the children and funky farm animal themed designer t-shirts to buy.
And while people sat on the grass enjoying their picnics, they were able to listen to the wonderful acoustic guitar music of Sky TV Presenter Nick Ashron.
