WEST DORSET: Kids charity website could help with summer plans

A LEADING children’s charity is signposting Dorset families to a summer of fun thanks to a new website from a local project.

The Barnardo’s Parent Support Adviser Service works with families to encourage children to overcome challenges and achieve their potential.

One of the most popular ways to engage with parents has been through the provision of free activities such as circus skills, arts, crafts, picnics and storytelling.

Barnardo’s has organised a wide range of events throughout July and August, details of which can now be found at www.barnardos.org.uk /dorsetpsa.

The website also includes a description of the service and how it can help, as well as contact details for local staff.

Managed by Barnardo’s South West and funded through Dorset County Council, the PSA project supports parents with their children’s social, emotional and behavioural problems in order to improve levels of educational attainment.

It also helps parents to find support to deal with drug or alcohol misuse, marital or financial difficulties, domestic abuse, imprisonment, bereavement or disability.

Project workers cover Beaminster, Blandford, Bridport, Christchurch, Corfe, Dorchester, Ferndown, Gillingham, Lyme Regis, Purbeck, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Weymouth, Portland and Wimborne. Barnardo’s children’s services manager Jeremy Coombe said: “Our teams offer free and non-judgemental advice to all families of all backgrounds.

“One of the best ways to reach out to parents and understand their needs has been through our holiday activities scheme. Families can access our support in a fun and informal environment while their children enjoy learning new skills and making new friends.

“We hope the new website will encourage even more people to have a look at what we have to offer.”
