14th July 2010DORCHESTER: Rotarians say thank you with fun day
A family fun day was held in the Borough Gardens in Dorchester as a big thank you to local residents for their outstanding generosity during the recent appeal for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Organised by both the Rotary Club of Dorchester and the Casterbridge Rotary Club, the appeal raised £42,000 and resulted in countless Shelter Boxes and Water Boxes being sent to the affected areas.
The Rotary Clubs were keen to say a huge thank you for this magnificent effort.
Hundreds of people attended the fun day and enjoyed the fine weather. Various stalls manned by local charities and organisations dotted the grass.
Dorchester Amateur Boxing Club, Dorchester Citizens Advice Bureau, and the Dorchester Opportunity Group all took the opportunity to raise both funds and their profile.
The young ladies from the Thomas Hardye School were seeking donations to help fund
their trip to Kenya next year for a once in a lifetime volunteering experience.
The Dorset ME Support Group, Home Start and the Dorchester Community Nursery School joined Lorna Low and her Palestinian goods, the Casterbridge Male Voice Choir and the Dorchester Royal Naval Association fresh from their successful Armed Forces Day last weekend.
The Casterbridge Rotary Club were all hands to the pumps, or should that be cans, in the beer tent. Candy floss, ice creams, lollies, and strawberries and cream from the ladies of the Inner Wheel kept everyone refreshed, as did the free cereal bars courtesy of Dorset Cereals.
Live music included the Dorchester Big Band and 10-year-old Alexander from St Osmunds School, who played the xylophone like a true professional. The school’s Harmony Singers gave another polished performance, as did the Mill Street Jazz Band.
If the weather got too much to bare you could have your blood pressure checked or pop over to one of Dorset Fire and Rescue’s engines to be hosed down.
