2nd June 2010WEYMOUTH: Masterclass in engineering
NINE Year 10 students from Weymouth’s All Saints school have enjoyed an engineering masterclass.
They went to Weymouth College’s Dorset Construction and Training Centre in Poundbury, Dorchester, as part of the AimHigher initiative to promote civil engineering and surveying to school pupils.
The students were split into teams and spent the day learning the skills of engineering and surveying, using optical levelling instruments to establish differences between heights above sea level and taking a tour of some of the sites under construction in Poundbury.
College construction and allied trades programme area manager Rex Witts said: “The students really enjoyed the day and their level of understanding was superb. Every student progressed through the day effortlessly.”
Luke Hughes, one of the students participating in the day, said that he was surprised by how much he had enjoyed it.
He added: “I have learnt a lot of new skills today and what we have been doing will go well with my work experience which is in the same area.”
