12th May 2010DORCHESTER: Cut a cake not care
THE Evergreens social group, based at Age Concern Dorchester, held a pre-election discussion led by local town, district and county councillor Trevor Jones.
Stressing at the outset that he was not there to preach the virtues of his own party, the group embarked on a lively question and answer session centred on the general election.
The many changes in election processes over the years were commented on, in particular the part now played by the media both nationally and on a more local basis.
Councillor Jones said: “National party leaders, of whichever political persuasion, like to talk about what they are going to do. Far more important is what they actually do. They should be judged by what you know about them and how they deliver their promises. It should also, however, be remembered that circumstances often beyond their control mean at times they may be unable to see their promises through. They are not always deliberately telling lies.”
There were one or two people present who wondered whether it was worth taking the time to vote. Trevor assured everyone that voting does make a difference, sometimes only a small one at other times maybe more substantial, but it does make a difference. He also assured people there is nothing to be feared from a coalition government, a common occurrence across Europe.
One gentleman had reservations about the influence Europe has over Britain and the real effects of a free market economy. But perhaps the overwhelming concern was the effect a new government would have on the state pension and pension credits, as well as care for the elderly. Would social care and support fall victim to any impending cuts?
Sally Goss, Care Services Manager, said: “It’s really important that older people can continue to access the care they need and that it is protected by any incoming government.”
And to emphasise this point, a cake bearing the slogan “Cut Cake not Care” was duly sliced up and enjoyed with a welcome cup of tea. Canvassing capers from Trevor wound up the discussion, with the words: “Voting is a privilege, so we should all do so.”
