5th May 2010WEYMOUTH: More protests over fuel plant
by Paul Crompton
PROTESTORS hit the streets of Weymouth during the second march against proposals to build a bio-fuel energy plant in the borough.
Around 100 people met on the Esplanade and marched through the town to Hope Square to voice their dissatisfaction over W4B Renewable Energy’s plans to build a bio-fuel energy plant on Portland.
The march was organised by the “No Oil Palm Energy” group and followed a similar one on Portland.
Andrew Butler from the NOPE group said: “The march was really good. It’s difficult to know how many people there were but I think it was just the right amount of people to make an impact, especially through the pedestrianised area. So we’ve certainly done what we intended to do.
“As you can see from the signs here people have lots of different reasons for concerns. For some its pollution locally, some people literally live over the chimneystacks around the Verne.
“Pollution will go up into the school and the hospital so obviously it’s a big concern.”
The marchers were protesting against the W4BRE bio oil-fuel energy plant, which was granted planning permission on a 6-5 vote by borough planners despite hundreds of objections to the scheme near Balaclava Bay.
The planning application had previously been thrown out because Weymouth and Portland Borough Council planning committee members had voiced a number of concerns.
