5th May 2010DORCHESTER: May Day traditions alive in Cheselborne
by Anita Harries
The weather looked down kindly on this year’s Cheselborne May Fair.
The event was opened by the Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Susie Hosford, who led the May Day procession and then proceeded to crown the May Queen, eight-year-old Rebecca Taylor.
The children from Cheselborne Village School, aged from four to nine, danced around the maypole before giving a display of Morris dancing.
The fancy dress competition was won by a bumble bee called Imogen, while the dog show had classes ranging from the waggiest tail to the dog that most resembled its owner!
Music was provided by the children from St Mary’s School Puddletown, whilst Igglepiggle and Upsy Daisy from the children’s programme “In the Night Garden” made a guest appearance with Marianne and Adrian Strong from Starlight Childcare.
This was a May Fair that celebrated in style. There was everything from laser shooting to a coconut shy and face painting, weaving demonstrations and a selection of bread courtesy of Riverford Organic Food and Veg.
Cake stalls, plant stalls, a grand raffle, and a tombola, joined Phoenix Cards and two ladies selling photographs and scented candles.
Along with the “May Cup” villagers could enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, an ice cream, Dorset cream teas, a ploughman’s lunch or a burger or hot dog from the barbecue.
