5th May 2010DORCHESTER: Students host own elections
by Paul Crompton
STUDENTS will be going to the polls tomorrow as Dorchester’s Thomas Hardye Scholl hosts their very own mock-election.
All 2,500 students will be swept up in election fever when five “Parliamentary Candidates” representing the five main parties vie for fellow pupils votes.
Teacher Anna Killock said: “It’s a complete mock election. It’s to see who is the most popular between the parties. We’re going to make it as similar as the real elections in West Dorset general election as we can.
“They are going to be doing the hustings and also a party political broadcast.”
The candidates are Ursula Oliver - Conservatives. Antony Tucker – Labour, Eamonn O’Malley - Liberal Democrats, Henry Love – UKIP and Rory Frost - Green Party.
Mrs Killock added the students had got more interested in politics since the first debate.
“The TV debate made the difference,” she said.
The school has a strong political sixth form department doing their A-Levels, and hosted a real hustings with the five parliamentary candidates for West Dorset last week.
A vote will be held for the most popular and the winner will be announced the same day, May 6th.
