BRIDPORT: Bridport off licence re-launched

THE former Threshers store in East Street was re-invented last week with the unveiling of its new name. Owners Alan and Serena Davies launched a competition to rename the store in the View from Bridport in March and the winner was announced on Tuesday of last week.

The off-license has now been re-named ‘Hop in the Grapevine,’ a name selected from over 50 entries.

Owner Alan Davies said: “Some people had mentioned the grapevine and others had come up with hops and then this lady came along and put it all together.

“This is a complete re-invention of the store because we are now independent, Threshers has totally gone. This means we are allowed to source more West Country products, and we are going to go down the line of more specialist beers, ciders and wines if we can.”

Bridport resident Ruth Hamilton, who suggested the winning name, was invited to make the grand unveiling on Tuesday evening. It was a double celebration for Ruth who coincidentally was also celebrating her birthday.

She said: “I just thought of wines, grapes, vines and hops and it just sort of moulded together. I was totally surprised when I found out, I jumped in the air, it’s the best birthday present because I never win a thing. The most I have won is £10 on the lottery so this is the best birthday present ever.

“Alan and his family and colleagues have been so nice and I really want the locals to support the business. The shop isn’t like Threshers at all and they have some really good deals going on.

“I think people tend to ‘shy away’ from off licences because they think they’re expensive but their prices are cheaper than other shops in town.

“All I would say is Hop in the Grapevine and check it out before going elsewhere and see the difference.”

As well as having her entry selected Ruth also received a case of wine for her efforts. The grand unveiling on Tuesday evening was topped off with wine and beer tasting and music from Shelby’s Elbows.
