21st April 2010BRIDPORT: New Scary Bones book launched in Dorchester
Dr Ron Dawson is launching the third story in his Scary Bones the Skeleton series at Dorchester’s Dinosaur Museum today (Wednesday).
Ron and, of course, Scary Bones will be in the museum between 11am and 12 noon to sign copies of Scary Bones Meets The Dinosaurs Of The Jurassic Coast and chat about his books. The museum’s exhibits will provide some interesting and excellent photo opportunities.
Following on from the success of Scary Bones The Skeleton Meets The Pirates of Brownsea Island, this new story is also set in Dorset.
In this adventure Scary Bones, the very strange Red String, Sasha and Ben uncover a hidden doorway in the cliffs at Lulworth and, by going through it, enter a lost world of dinosaurs and argumentative cave men.
They meet an as yet undiscovered dinosaur called Durdle Doorus, escape the attempts by Ziggy and Zaggy, two very bad cavemen, and Tyrone and Albert, the two monster O’Saurus brothers, who all want to eat them for their supper.
With the help their friends Durdle Doorus, Dippy Ludicrous and Terry Dactil, they eventually escape both from being eaten and the lost world.
Poor Durdle Doorus, however is not so fortunate and the story ends with a magical myth as to how the famous Durdle Door landmark was created.
As with the previous two adventures, the book comes with a mysterious sealed envelope which should not be opened until the very end of the story.
This unusual feature of the Scary Bones Books is great attraction and incentive to children which are intended for reading to children aged 5/6 years and above and reading themselves by able readers up to the age of 12 years
The award winning Dinosaur Museum is Britain’s original dinosaur museum and the only museum on mainland Britain devoted to dinosaurs.
It features fossils, skeletons, and life-size dinosaur reconstructions linked with hands on and multimedia displays to inform and entertain.
Sue Bates, former chair of the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, who has also reviewed the previous two adventures, made this assessment: “The Scary Bones’ adventures are not just good stories, they give magical moments that will last in the memory for ever, and perhaps just a little bit longer.”
Both Ron Dawson and Sue Burleigh, the illustrator, live in Dorset.
Besides creating the humorous and appealing illustrations for the series,
Sue is an acknowledged cartoonist and her cartoons have been widely published including in the acclaimed Punch magazine.
