WINSHAM: Pupils on a learning journey

By Marion Draper

PUPILS at Winsham Primary School are lucky to spend a lot of time with their community. It is school policy to welcome adults to spend time in the school, sharing their knowledge with the younger generation.

Recently the youngsters spent a Friday afternoon on a “Learning Journey”.

Staff, pupils, parents, carers, governors and the community all joined in with explanations of aspects of the children’s learning, both in and out of school.

The afternoon was led by acting headteacher Sarah Barlow who introduced the new KS2 teacher, Mr Keith Lynham, who then went on to talk through the role of a teacher.

An array of speakers talked about their contributions to the children’s learning and pupils then read out their own thoughts on how their learning journeys were met. The school would like to thank the band of volunteers who help with reading, chess and after school activities.

On the following Monday the school spent a whole day outside on the school field with the Glastonbury Trust taking part in an outdoor learning day.

This was a forest school event where they learned about aspects of  outdoor living, like how to make a camp fire safely. They were taught creative skills such as how to make their own pencils by using sticks, with charcoal for the lead.

A big favourite was making pots from clay and playing tug of war and other outdoor games. All the children had an enjoyable day and got very muddy.
