11th March 2010CHARD: Getting to grips with grit
By Marion Draper
AFTER the severe icy conditions at the beginning of the year, county councillors Jenny Kenton and Jill Shortland decided to ensure grit was available to residents in the most severely hit areas by using of their community budgets to purchase more grit bins for Chard and the surrounding villages.
Councillor Shortland said: “We don’t have very much community budget this year but both of us decided that, given the difficulties, the only way to support residents was to spend some of it on grit bins. These bins will help but it cannot be the only answer.”
Councillor Kenton added: “What the county council needs is a good system that is agreed then adhered to, not like this year. Jill and I will also be demanding a good leaflet for residents to explain how the county council meets its obligations and how residents can help themselves.”
The two councillors purchased 12 grit bins for Chard north and eight for Chard south reflecting the most pressing needs for each division.
Parish councils can also purchase grit bins if they have resources available.
The councillors said they had been given a written assurance that the county council will fill the bins when they are in place.
