11th March 2010ILMINSTER: A fond farewell to warden Ernie
ILMINSTER Town Clerk Stephen Fisher and the Mayor, Councillor Margaret Excell, paid special tribute to warden Ernie Kemp at his retirement party held in the Shrubbery Hotel, Ilminster, after 15 years of loyal service to the town.
The wardens of Ilminster have a unique job with their normal groundsmen’s duties combined with working on Herne Hill, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty.
Mr Fisher said: “I don’t think I have ever worked with anyone who was easier to get along with. Ernie would come to me and say ‘this is the bad news, and this is what I’ve done about it or what I am about to do’.”
The mayor added: “In the 11 years I have served in the council, Ernie has helped me a number of times and always found him very approachable.
"He is quite a joker and I have quite a few phtos with birds flying out of my ears. I must also thank his wife Lynn because every time I planted a tree she has been there to photograph it and always supported us.”
Popular Ernie, who had said he was “looking forward to putting my feet up in front of the telly” was presented with a large screen LCD TV and a special plate turned from Herne Hill oak, made by fellow warden Terry Portch. There was also a joke gift of an alligator lilo and a cork hat. Mrs Kemp was presented with flowers by the mayor.
Mr Kemp said: “I would like to thank everyone for the generous gifts, I hope they give me as much pleasure as the 15 years working for you have.
"Thanks to Terry and Chris who worked with me, Steve and the office staff and town councillors who have all been so supportive and helpful. Also to the people who walk the rec and the hill, I shall miss seeing their smiling faces everyday which made it such a pleasure to work there.
