11th March 2010BRIDPORT SQUASH: Spirited 2nds short on experience
Bridport 2nd 9pts
West Hants 16pts
BRIDPORT 2nd’s put in a spirited display against a strong West Hants side, and it is the experience of playing against teams like this which augers well for the second team’s future writes Roger Lewis.
Bridport’s Tony Cooke, promoted to No 1 was up against a very competent performer in Nico Heynes, and whilst he was as gritty and determined as always, Heynes’ ability to reproduce a winning shot when it really mattered eventually saw him through 9-5, 7-9, 9-7, 9-2.
Robert Muir at two had his work cut out against the visiting Matt Satchall. As well as Muir played, it was Satchall who asserted his authority and never let Muir into the game. He found the pressure too much allowing Satchall to win 9-1, 9-5, 9-6.
Steve Hodder, making his season’s debut at three for Bridport had an excellent victory against Dave Pickford. Hodder played sensible, intelligent squash to fully justify his place in the side and his ability to apply pressure at critical times paid off and he ran out a worthy winner by 9-2, 9-2, 5-9, 1-9, 9-6.
Eo Mamanta was up against Lorraine Page at four, and as well as she was allowed to play Mamanta’s ability to counterattack proved decisive.
The Bridport player has come on leaps and bounds with team squash and this showed in his 9-0, 9-5, 9-3 victory.
Paul Cross has been involved in some long, hard games this season and this was no exception against West Hants Peter Trayler. A battle of tactics as each player tried to dominate led to a number of long, hard rallies, but in the end it was the tight boast shots of Tayler that won him a narrow win by 7-9, 9-5, 1-9, 9-7, 9-5.
