WEST BAY SEA ANGLING: Fred gives a hoot!

WEST Bay Sea Angling Club President Fred Bowditch reversed that well known saying ‘Don’t give a hoot!’ by awarding the President's Cup, presented to the member he feels has worked hard for the club or promotion of the club over the year, to Roger Guppy, affectionately known as Hoot!

In explaining his choice at the club’s annual presentation dinner, Mr Bowditch said that whilst there were many worthy winners he chose Hoot for all his hard work with the junior section, which over the years has produced two juniors for the England team in Steven Rathbone, who was crowned Individual Junior World Champion in 2008, and Oliver Mears as well as Connor Hallett who is an England squad member.

The dinner held at Highlands End Holiday Park last Saturday was attended by almost 50 members and guests.

It was a great night for Mears who in addition to winning eleven trophies for his fishing also won the Clubman Shield for the member who has best supported the club through the year based on attendance at all club organized activities.

In all over twenty members won trophies for their prowess over the year.

Fishing was once again poor in the latest competition, a Sunday daytime fish at Seatown.

With a bright warm afternoon and a rising tide, most chose to fish the rockier areas in the hope of finding that elusive good fish, but the best they could do was Dave Chidzoy’s 635g catch of pout and rockling which took the prize.

Simon Bowditch managed 420g of the same selection for second place with Chris Harwood third. Kim Hyett was the top lady angler whilst PJ Wheeler landed the heaviest fish, a 225g rockling.

Most species was a tie between Oliver Mears and Lewis Bowditch.
