11th March 2010LYME REGIS: Golf news
SUNDAY, March 7th was a bright sunny day but with a biting Easterly breeze, matched by hard frozen fairways and greens writes Steve Percival.
The early starters found the conditions hard to handle even when, after a few hours, the warm sun had broken through to soften the ground, the strengthened wind was still difficult to contend with and the majority of competitors struggled to card a good score.
However, some managed to overcome adversity to record scores either below or very close to net par. In Division one Adam White, playing off 10 and Ed Lawrence playing off 5 both recorded a one shot below course scratch with a net 70.
However, it was Adam White who took the honours on countback despite the fact that Ed Lawrence had recorded the lowest gross score in the division.
Eighteen-year-old Greg Matthews , a product of the club junior acadamy, playing off 18, also carded a net 70 to achieve third place. In Division two Shane Stone (20) was the clear winner with a net 72 one shot better than John Lawrence (17) who carded a highly creditable net 73.
In third place with a net 74 was Rob Coombe (16) who beat Adrian Wells (16) on count back. Adrian, however, had the satisfaction of recording the best gross score in the division.
Perhaps a reflection of the conditions, only two players recorded birdie twos. Jamie Hughes, a member of the club green staff, and Barry Goswell, who has recently recovered from major surgery, both recorded their achievements on the eighth hole.

March 4th Medal Competition
At last we played on 18 holes but although our problems with the weather were over for now, another hazard confronted us, horses had invaded the course and trampled the fairways and some of the greens.
The panic to chase them off the course, just made matters worse because they broke into a canter leaving deep hoof prints on the already soft ground. The greenkeeper’s were in despair, their hard work to get the greens ready for the start of the season would have to be redone.
As usual Jean Moss was consistent in her play, helped by the sunny conditions she carded a nett 74 and that was in spite of going out of bounds on the 16th. To her delight she cut her handicap from 24 to 21.
The Captain was not so delighted because she’s been picked to play in the semi final of the Legg Bowl against Yeovil on Monday. If she keeps playing as well as she has been lately she will achieve her ambition of reducing her handicap to 18 this summer.
Jane Southcome, also picked to play in the Legg Bowl, cut her handicap from nine to eight lets hope both players can keep playing well for the semi final.
Lyme Regis played away at Woodbury in The Mail On Sunday and won 4 – 1, they now go through to the 3rd round.
Results: Division 1: Jane Southcome 76, Sue Davidge 79ocb, Jane Dixon 79. Division 2: Jean Moss 74, Glenys Phillips 78, Angela Clark 79. Division 3: Joy Madge 86ocb, Hanna Jacobsen 86, Sheila Claringbold 88.
