11th March 2010The story of Winston’s wife ‘My Darling Clemmie’
THE highly talented actress Rohan McCullough will be returning to the Artsreach circuit to perform her gripping solo play, ‘My Darling Clemmie’, following its success in the autumn.
This is the remarkable, moving and highly entertaining story of the woman who married one of the truly great figures of the 20th century: Sir Winston Churchill. They say that ‘behind every great man is a great woman’, and here Rohan will enthrall audiences with the story of life as the wartime Prime Minister’s loyal wife.
The Churchills' marriage, in spite of the stresses of a public life, was a close and affectionate one, and Winston was known to have quoted “My most brilliant achievement was my ability to persuade my wife to marry me”.
The Churchill family is linked to the Digby family of Dorset. The first Sir Winston Churchill lived in Minterne Magna in the 17th century, and much later WW2 leader Winston Spencer Churchill (then First Lord of the Admiralty) came to this seat of the aristocratic Digby family in 1939.
Rohan McCullough is a highly experienced actress both on stage and screen.
Her most notable success has been with her one-woman shows – Testament of Youth, The Towers of Trebizond, and The Tale of Beatrix Potter – which she has performed worldwide.
Rohan performed ‘Mortimer’s Miscellany’ with Sir John Mortimer at Cerne Abbas village hall, in one of his last performances before his death.
‘My Darling Clemmie’ is written by Hugh Whitemore, who has written extensively for stage and screen, and he received three awards (including an Emmy) for his TV film ‘The Gathering Storm’ about Churchill in the 1930s. Whitemore revisits this subject for ‘My Darling Clemmie’, which is directed by Gareth Armstrong.
Performances will take place at: Shipton Gorge on Wednesday, March 17th, 7:30pm. For more details call 01308 897562. West Stafford Friday, March 19th, 7.30pm and 01305 257266.
